Why do some cats calcify their kidneys? Cats are a curious species when it comes to calcium, even going so far as to have their very own calcium disorder!

This lecture will define what is meant by nephrocalcinosis and explore whether this condition is linked to nephrolithiasis in cats. We will review recent evidence from published research to evaluate the risk factors for, and implications of, calcium diosrders within the feline kidney.

We will explore questions such as "does the CKD or the nephrolith come first?" and "why are younger cats more at risk for ureterolithiasis than older cats?"

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participant will be able to define nephrocalcinosis and describe the risk factors for, and implications of, nephrocalcinosis in cats.
Upon completion, participant will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the risk factors for a diagnosis of nephrolithiasis, and describe which cats are at highest risk for ureteral obstruction due to ureterolithiasis.
Upon completion, participant will be able to explain how the presence of nephrocalcinosis increases the risk for nephrolithiasis, but not necessarily ureteral obstruction, in cats.
