This session will discuss the basics of energy balance, body weight regulation, and obesity pathogenesis. Specific emphasis will be placed on the role of the brain in regulating food intake and energy expenditure, the hormonal and neuronal systems responsible for these functions, and their adaptation to weight loss. Obesity pathogenesis mechanisms will be discussed as well as new therapies for disease management.
Learning Objectives:
describe the basic hormonal systems that govern energy balance regulation.
define the brain regions and cell types involved in energy balance.
describe a potential role for glial inflammation in the pathogenesis of obesity.
