Nutrition as an adjunctive therapy supports improved pet health beyond the diseased condition. Nutritionally active ingredients provide a safe and natural addition to clinically address many health conditions. While acute issues such as reduced renal function, cancer, or cardiac disease will always be a part of veterinary practices, veterinarians working with a pet owner can improve development of puppies and kittens, address changes that occur with aging, and provide support for healthy lifestyle (ie, overweight) management. Physiological changes such as neurological development, microbiota changes, inflammation, and dysfunction of cellular metabolism occur during these conditions. Natural, orally ingestible options are available to address these conditions and help pets achieve their most healthy condition. This presentation will review physiological changes during the lifetime of the pet and key ingredients and nutrients available to address these conditions.
