Presentation Description / Summary: Liver disease in small animals can present in many different ways, from vague lethargy and inappetence to life-threatening hypoglycaemia and neurological dysfunction. For veterinary nurses and technicians, this makes hepatic cases both challenging and rewarding to manage. By understanding how the liver functions, what happens when it fails, and the nursing strategies that make the biggest impact, we can make a significant difference to patient outcomes. In this case-based session, we’ll work through real clinical examples of dogs and cats with hepatic disease. Together, we’ll discuss pathophysiology in practical terms, explore common clinical signs and diagnostic findings, and highlight our role in monitoring, treatment, and client support.
Learning Objectives:
Explain the key functions of the liver and the consequences of hepatic dysfunction in small animal patients.
Interpret common clinical signs, laboratory abnormalities, and imaging findings associated with liver disease.
Identify appropriate nursing interventions for patients with acute and chronic hepatic disease.
Develop monitoring and client education strategies that support ongoing management and improve patient wellbeing, both in the hospital and at home.
