Presentation Description / Summary: Ensuring veterinary learners are clinically competent before entering practice is a central responsibility of educators. However, assessing competence remains. This session will explore the landscape of clinical competence assessment, including direct observation, case-based discussions, OSCEs, and assessment during clinical rotations. The LC-CUSUM (Learning Curve Cumulative Sum) method will be discussed. This is a statistical approach designed to track individual learner performance over time and determine when competence has been achieved. LC-CUSUM offers a data-driven option for assessment. Implementation of LC-CUSUM will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to discuss different clinical competence assessment methods used in veterinary education, including direct observation, case-based discussions, OSCEs, and clinical rotation evaluations.
Upon completion, participants will be able to evaluate the feasibility and potential impact of implementing LC-CUSUM in veterinary clinical training programs.
