Presentation Description / Summary: Hyponatremia and hypernatremia are common disorders in equine intensive care units but arise from very different causes. Significant changes in sodium concentration can result in serious disease and have significant effects on acid-base balance. This presentation focuses on the physiology of sodium regulation and the common causes for an abnormal sodium concentration. Treatment of hyponatremia and hypernatremia will be discussed separately in light of new research in people and horses.
Learning Objectives:
understand the common causes of hyponatremia and hypernatremia.
recognize when sodium abnormalities need to be treated.
formulate a treatment plan for hyponatremia and hypernatremia.
