University of Georgia Athens, Georgia, United States
Presentation Description / Summary: This session will provide an expert-led update on recent advances in equine endocrinology, focusing on pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) and equine metabolic syndrome (EMS). Discussion will include new insights into disease prevalence, diagnostic approaches, therapeutic strategies, and recognition of secondary complications such as laminitis, reproductive impacts, and altered musculoskeletal health. The session will also highlight emerging insights and practical approaches to optimize patient care. Attendees will be invited to contribute questions and clinical perspectives to foster an interactive exchange and translate evidence into everyday practice.
Learning Objectives:
List recent advances in the diagnosis and management of PPID and EMS
Describe the clinical implications of endocrine dysregulation in horses.
Describe diagnostic approaches for PPID and EMS, including ACTH, TRH stimulation, and oral glucose/sugar testing
Explain therapeutic applications, including pergolide for PPID and strategies for managing insulin dysregulation and metabolic health in EMS, and discuss common comorbidities and secondary complications.
