Presentation Description / Summary: Conversations surrounding the use and benefits of probiotics in our equine patients have evolved alongside marked advances in knowledge regarding the equine gastrointestinal microbiome over the last decade. This lecture will review the definition of, differences between, and benefits of pre- post- and pro-biotics with an emphasis on equine related research. We will explore the effects of production, manufacturing, storage and bioavailability of the three classifications and the expected physiological effects. Will also include case based discussions about which classification is most appropriate (or effective) in which situation.

Upon completion, participants will be able to explain the differences between pre- post- and pro-biotic definitions within the equine supplement market.
Upon completion, participants will be able to critically evaluate and draw comparisons between various equine supplements as it pertains to claims relative to pre- post- and pro-biotics.
