Note: New Subject and Title approved by committee.  Stereotactic Radiation Therapy: Talking Points for Medical Oncologists

Presentation will discuss the use of radiation therapy as part of multimodality therapy plans for dogs and cats with cancer. Examples of tumor types to be covered include: Canine anal sac carcinoma, thyroid carcinoma, high grade soft tissue sarcomas, oral melanomas, osteosarcomas, lymphoma and mast cell tumors. The session will be presented in a practical, “decision tree” format where the use of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, combined therapy or no therapy will be discussed. When appropriate, grade of the tumors and stage of the patient as well as timing staging will be presented.  Evidence-based, practical and financial considerations will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to help clients weigh the risks, costs and benefits of combining chemotherapy and radiation therapy in the treatment of a variety of veterinary oncology patients.
  • Upon completion, participants will understand what are the most important staging tests and when those tests are most helpful in the decision making process for pet families as they make decisions for their pets with cancer.
  • Upon completion, participants will understand the advantages that stereotactic radiation therapy protocols provide over conventional radiation therapy protocols in patients treated with both chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
