Improving Access to Radiation via Robotic Assisted Orthovoltage Therapy

Presentation Description / Summary: Presentation which will present advancements in the use of orthovoltage radiation therapy for the treatment of pets with cancer and inflammatory disease. We will discuss the practical differences between megavoltage and orthovoltage radiation therapy and how real time imaging and robotic technology allows lower energy x rays to be used safely and effectively.
This novel treatment delivery system is mobile and can be used to treat the majority of solid tumors seen by veterinary oncologists. It can also be used to treat inflammatory diseases. Recent case examples will be included.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to understand how the historically limited applications of orthovoltage radiation therapy are overcome by this new technology
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to understand the practical benefits of this technology including space requirements, speed of treatment, intraoperative usage, and portability.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to identify the types of patients with cancer and inflammatory diseases that may benefit from orthovoltage radiation therapy.
