Presentation Description / Summary: The mechanisms of refeeding syndrome occur in all animals when feeding foods containing carbohydrates occurs, the degree or severity of which depends on many different predisposing factors. This lecture will examine the predisposing factors and explore ways to mitigate them. The importance of the nutritional assessment, hydration levels, and electrolyte balance is key. We will then follow on to investigate treatment regimes that are being instigated in human medicine with specific algorithms.
Learning Objectives:
Understand what refeeding syndrome is and the pathophysiology.
Identify the predisposing factors can cause or exacerbate refeeding syndrome.
Aid in the treatment and monitoring of animals with changes that indicate refeeding syndrome.
