Presentation Description / Summary: This lecture will review and highlight a very promising new technology, called Focused Ultrasound (FUS). Focused Ultrasound is a 25 year old technology that utilizes an array device which then emits either high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to ablate tissues or low intensity (LIFU) for neuromodulation or opening the blood brain barrier. There are over 10 FDA approvals for FUS against a variety of indications. There have been comparatively a much smaller number of veterinary FUS studies in the scientific literature. This lecture will review the current state of human and veterinary FUS and further outline large gap needs in vet med that could be addressed using FUS technology.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to understand how FUS works in the high intensity (HIFU) and low intensity (LIFU) environments
Upon completion, participants will be able to be more fluent in the current FDA approvals for FUS in human medicine
Upon completion, the participants will better understand the current state of FUS use and publications in veterinary medicine with an eye on possible future uses to meet unmet clinical needs
