Stem Cell Therapy in Veterinary Medicine: Practical Applications for General and Specialty Practice

Learning Objectives:

• Explain the primary mechanisms of action of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in veterinary patients, with emphasis on paracrine signaling, immunomodulation (e.g., promotion of regulatory T-cells, inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines, complement regulation via Factor H), immune tolerance re-education, and anti-inflammatory effects, and critically appraise how these differ from traditional broad immunosuppression in conditions like IMHA and other autoimmune disorders.

• Evaluate clinical outcomes and safety of intravenous allogeneic MSC therapy using real-world data and retrospective studies (e.g., 2 million cells/kg dosing, multiple rounds achieving ~76% hematologic recovery to PCV ≥30% in primary IMHA core cohorts with minimal adverse events), including dose-response relationships, PCV trends, relapse reduction, and comparison to conventional immunosuppressive protocols, to inform patient selection and prognostic discussions.
• Develop strategies to incorporate MSC and regenerative therapies into multimodal management plans to improve patient outcomes, expand therapeutic options in refractory or complex cases, and reduce reliance on long-term immunosuppression (e.g., corticosteroids, cyclosporine), while addressing informed consent, monitoring (serial PCV, clinical response), ethical/regulatory compliance, owner education on experimental aspects, and the role of ongoing research/standardization for broader adoption in internal medicine.
