This session reviews the clinical use of NT-proBNP as a cardiac biomarker in dogs and cats. Attendees will learn the physiologic basis of NT-proBNP release and its role as a marker of myocardial stretch. Practical applications in general and specialty practice will be discussed, including differentiation of cardiac versus non-cardiac disease, triage of clinical signs, and support of referral decisions. Emphasis will be placed on appropriate test selection, interpretation within clinical context, and limitations of NT-proBNP testing.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the physiologic basis of NT-proBNP release and its role as a biomarker of myocardial stretch in dogs and cats.
Identify appropriate clinical scenarios in which NT-proBNP testing can aid in the evaluation and triage of suspected cardiac disease in general and specialty practice.
Interpret NT-proBNP results within the context of clinical findings, comorbidities, and diagnostic limitations to support informed clinical decision-making.
