Presentation Description / Summary: The talk will aim to introduce background knowledge (from rat and other animal models) of intestinal phosphorus handling: liberation and absorption. Then outline recent research work that has shown similar mechanisms to exist in the cat. This includes the presence of intestinal alkaline phosphatase and active transportation, using sodium-phosphate cotransporters. Lastly, we will consider how these enactors of phosphorus liberation/absorption might be manipulated to reduce intestinal phosphorus uptake and potentially benefit renal health.
Learning Objectives:
Gain an understanding of the biological mechanisms that control intestinal phosphorus handling with specific reference to the cat.
Become aware of the way in which dietary phosphorus may be liberated and how this could be influenced by dietary phosphorus source.
Appreciate how increased knowledge and manipulation of intestinal phosphorus handling might be beneficial for renal health.
