Description: Paroxysmal dyskinesia (PD) is an often misunderstood and frequently misdiagnosed movement disorder in companion animals. Veterinary technicians are often the first to observe, record, and communicate abnormal episodes to the veterinary team, making their role critical in accurate recognition and case management.
This lecture will provide veterinary technicians with a comprehensive overview of paroxysmal dyskinesia, including its clinical presentation, differentiation from mimics, suspected causes, diagnostic challenges, and current approaches to management. Special Emphasis will be placed on technician-driven contributions—such as detailed history-taking, episode documentation, client communication, and supportive care strategies—that directly impact patient outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
Understand what movement disorders are, with a focus on paroxysmal dyskinesia.
Recognize the hallmark features of paroxysmal dyskinesia and distinguish from mimics.
Identify the reported breed-specific paroxysmal dyskinesia syndromes.
Recognize the therapeutic options available for certain breed-specific paroxysmal dyskinesia syndromes.
