Presentation Description / Summary: The objective of this talk is to discuss the debilitating condition medication related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in cats, secondary to bisphosphonate medications. MRONJ is a rare but intractable disease, that has been described in both humans and animals, associated with certain medications including long-term use of potent anti-resorptives. The talk will include presenting concerns, clinical findings, diagnostic testing, interventions, outcomes and prognosis in cats who are affected by this disease. The talk will also give clinicians useful suggestions of how to reduce the chance for MRONJ, when prescribing bisphosphonate medications in cats. The talk will draw information from relevant comparative literature from humans and other species.
