Presentation Description / Summary: Urolithiasis is a common and life-threatening emergency in small ruminants that requires rapid triage, collaborative care, and diligent post-operative management. In this case-based session, attendees will follow the real-time progression of a blocked goat from initial presentation through diagnosis, surgical intervention, and recovery. The case will serve as a foundation to explore the technician’s critical role in each phase of care. This session highlights the value of technician observations and decision-making in the outcome of obstructive urolithiasis. Whether you work in a mixed animal practice or a referral hospital, you’ll leave with actionable skills and a deeper understanding of how to support these high-risk patients from triage to discharge.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize the common clinical signs of urolithiasis in small ruminants and apply principles of triage and stabilization.
Upon completion, participants will be able to integrate appropriate post-operative nursing care, including catheter maintenance, urine output monitoring, pain control, and complication detection.
Upon completion, participants will be able to communicate effective prevention strategies to clients, focusing on diet, water management, and monitoring to reduce recurrence risk.
