Presentation Description / Summary: Feline constipation is characterized by prolonged gastrointestinal (GI) transit and often presents as dry stool and difficult/absent defecation. Veterinary team members know that constipation can occur secondary to local GI or systemic diseases. However, following the rule out of predisposing causes, the diagnosis for an estimated 60% to 70% of cats is idiopathic constipation. Cats with recurrent constipation require lifelong therapy, which is stressful for the cat and can be frustrating for the cat owner. This presentation will review the veterinary technician's role in feline constipation, including our role in helping the veterinarian in the diagnosis and medical management of feline idiopathic constipation. We will delve into nutritional strategies and specific nutrients which aid in managing feline idiopathic constipation.
