Dr. Thaler obtained MD/PhD degrees in Biomedical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego followed by Internal Medicine and endocrinology training at the University of Washington. He joined the UW faculty in 2010 and is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and the UW Medicine Diabetes Institute.
Dr. Thaler’s research involves elucidating mechanisms of obesity and diabetes pathogenesis with a specific focus on the role of hypothalamic glial cells (astrocytes and microglia) and inflammation in modulating susceptibility to metabolic disease. His current work aims to identify glial factors that can be developed as novel targets for metabolic therapeutics.
